Suicide risk is highly prevalent among individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Self-disgust, defined as disgust directed internally and comprised of disgust with oneself (disgusting self) and with one's behaviors (disgusting ways), may impact this increased risk. The present study examined self-disgust as a putative mechanism linking PTSD symptoms with suicide risk. A sample of 347 trauma-exposed undergraduates completed measures of PTSD symptoms, suicide risk, self-disgust, and depressive symptoms. Controlling for depressive symptoms, a process model indicated PTSD symptoms were positively linked to suicide risk via increased disgusting self but not disgusting ways. Process models examining individual PTSD symptom clusters revealed positive, indirect links between all PTSD symptom clusters except alterations in arousal and reactivity and suicide risk via disgusting self. These findings expand on growing literature documenting the importance of self-disgust in trauma-related pathology by identifying connections with suicide risk. Future directions and clinical considerations are discussed.

Posttraumatic stress and hazardous alcohol use in trauma-exposed young adults: indirect effects of self-disgust.

BACKGROUND:Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorders are highly co-occurring. Several explanatory models of the relation between PTSD and hazardous alcohol use have been identified. However, the exact nature of this relation is not fully understood. Self-disgust may explain the relation between PTSD symptoms and hazardous drinking. OBJECTIVES:The goal of the current study was to examine whether there was an indirect effect of probable PTSD on hazardous alcohol use via two domains of self-disgust: (disgust with characteristics of the self, disgust with one's behavior). Participants were 376 undergraduate students who reported experiencing at least one Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for DSM Disorders, 5th edition-defined traumatic event. Participants completed self-report measures online, which assessed their trauma exposure, PTSD symptoms, self-disgust, and their alcohol use behaviors. RESULTS:Probable PTSD was indirectly associated with an increased likelihood of engaging in hazardous drinking through the pathway of increased disgust toward one's behaviors. Although probable PTSD was also positively linked to disgust with characteristics of the self, this form of self-disgust was associated with a decreased likelihood of engaging in hazardous drinking, leading to a negative indirect relationship between probable PTSD and hazardous drinking. Conclusions/Importance: Overall, this study suggests that the role of self-disgust in the association between PTSD and hazardous drinking is complex, highlighting the need for further research in this area.

Exploring the role of the self in disgust-related psychopathologies.

While clinical research on disgust relies on nonclinical research, the framework of disgust as an immune mechanism is not as central in clinical research. The immune framework for disgust may be integrated into clinical research by acknowledging the role of the self as the critical element protected by the immune system. In this review, we offer the premise that at the center of all disgust-related behaviors, thoughts, and cognitions is an attempt to protect the self (i.e., "disgust is self-centered" or DISC). We offer evidence in support of DISC and explore the relevance of DISC to clinical research for several disgust-related psychopathologies (obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, anorexia nervosa, and self-disgust). We then offer future directions for DISC research into disgust-related psychopathologies.

Assessing psychological symptom networks related to HIV-positive duration among people living with HIV: a network analysis.

This study aims to explore and visualize relationships among multiple psychological symptoms among people living with HIV (PLWH) with different HIV-positive durations and to compare centrality indices and densities of psychological symptom networks. We used subsets of data collected from five designated HIV/AIDS hospitals in China. Networks were constructed among 16 psychological symptoms. Centrality properties, including strength and closeness, were adopted to describe relationships among symptoms. The results showed that PLWH with longer HIV-positive durations had denser emotional networks, which indicated that they had more emotional neuroticism than their newly diagnosed counterparts. Sadness, self-abasement, and self-loathing were the most central psychological symptoms across different HIV-positive durations. Our study suggests the need to provide psychosocial support services targeting PLWH according to changing symptom severity and neuroticism trajectories. Interventions should focus on increasing empathy for PLWH and enhancing the ability to consider the situation from different perspectives to avoid the development of neuroticism in long-term survivors.

This study examines the reliability and validity of the Self Loathing Subscale (SLSS) of the Exercise Orientation Questionnaire (EOQ) as a screening tool for possible eating disorders. We administered the SLSS and two other eating disorder screening instruments to 160 college students. Results indicate that the SLSS shows high internal consistency, concurrent validity, and convergent validity. Since the SLSS is based on questions about exercise and is not easily identifiable as a screening tool for eating disorders, the scale may be particularly useful in identifying possible pathology among individuals who may try to suppress or deny obvious symptoms of eating disorders.

This study examined the contribution of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis and symptomatology to the difficulties of anger, aggression, and self-harm in a Northern Ireland clinical community sample. A "current complex PTSD" (CCPTSD) group (n=11) was compared with a "current PTSD" group (n=31) on self-report measures of these variables. The CCPTSD group demonstrated significantly higher levels of physical aggression and self-harm than the PTSD group. The complex PTSD symptom of 'alterations in self-perception' was a significant predictor of aggression and history of self-harm, suggesting the potential role of posttraumatic shame and self-loathing in PTSD theoretical models of these destructive behaviors. Social desirability was a notable confounding influence in the assessment of anger, aggression, and self-harm in traumatised individuals.

From Stress to Psychopathology: Relationship with Self-Reassurance and Self-Criticism in Czech University Students.

Psychological stress has become a major concern, potentially leading to diverse health problems including psychopathology such as depression and anxiety. Transactional Model of Stress and Coping is an established model, conceptualizing stressful experiences via person-environment relationship. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the pathway from stress to depression/anxiety, with a focus on self-criticism (inadequate-self and hated-self) and self-reassurance (reassured-self) in Czech students who suffered from high prevalence of mental health problems. Convenience sample of 119 undergraduates completed the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 and the Forms of the Self-Criticizing/Attacking & Self-Reassuring Scale. Correlation and path analyses were conducted. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines were used to aid an accurate and complete report of the study. Depression, anxiety, and stress were positively associated with inadequate-self and hated-self while negatively associated with reassured-self. Both inadequate-self and hated-self partially mediated the stress-depression and stress-anxiety relationships, whereas reassured-self only partially mediated the stress-depression relationship. Inadequate-self had greater impact on the stress-depression/anxiety pathways than hated-self and reassured-self. Findings indicate that clinical treatment may benefit from targeting the feelings of inadequacy to prevent stress progressing to psychopathology. This is particularly relevant as stress levels are rising globally. Our findings offer developments to the Transactional Model, and help practitioners and educators identify solutions to protect mental health of Czech university students.

Mental Well-Being of Czech University Students: Academic Motivation, Self-Compassion, and Self-Criticism.

University students in the Czech Republic suffer from a low level of mental well-being. Research in other university student populations suggests that academic motivation, self-compassion, and self-criticism are strongly related to mental well-being. Students who are motivated to study, are kind toward themselves, and are less judgmental of themselves tend to have a high level of mental well-being. These relationships had not been evaluated in Czech students. Accordingly, this cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the relationships between mental well-being, academic motivation (intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation), self-compassion (self-reassurance) and self-criticism (self-inadequacy and self-hate). Of 130 students approached, a convenience sampling of 119 psychology students at a university in the Czech Republic completed a survey regarding these constructs. Correlation, regression, and path analyses were conducted. Mental well-being was positively associated with intrinsic motivation and self-compassion, and negatively associated with amotivation and self-criticism. Self-compassion was identified as the strongest predictor of mental well-being. Lastly, intrinsic motivation mediated the pathway from self-compassion to mental well-being, but not the one from self-inadequacy to mental well-being, and the one from self-hate to mental well-being. Our findings can help educators to identify effective means to protect students' mental well-being. Cultivating students' self-compassion may be helpful to protect their mental well-being. University staff and educators in the Czech Republic need to consider ways to embed self-compassion training into their students' programmes or university life.

Changes in Chinese students' academic emotions after examinations: Pride in success, shame in failure, and self-loathing in comparison.

BACKGROUND:Several attempts have been made to examine students' academic emotions (AEs) in Western contexts, but less is known about how students' self-reported emotions vary over time. AIMS:The study aimed to understand Chinese students' emotional responses to academic events and the impact of high-stakes testing on their AEs in the first year with a repeated-measures survey after the Semester 1 and Semester 2 mid-term examinations. SAMPLES:351 first-year university students completed both surveys in an elite Chinese university, where the top 10% of first-year students were assigned to an honours programme. METHODS:Self-reported AEs survey responses were evaluated with confirmatory factor analysis. Invariance testing between honours and ordinary students and between semesters was used to examine between-group differences across time. RESULTS:A three-factor model of AEs (i.e., admired, shame, and self-loathing) was found in both semesters, with strong invariance between semesters. Mean scores between groups were equivalent and semester. However, self-loathing had the lowest mean (mean = 2.50; between mostly disagree and slightly agree), admired was at moderately agree (mean = 4.00), and shame was strongest at just over moderately agree (mean = 4.20). CONCLUSIONS:This study reveals a three-factor structure of AEs and the stability of these emotions among highly successful Chinese learners. Despite being elite students, this sample of Chinese learners felt shame and pride in response to mid-term examinations.

Self-hate, dissociation, and suicidal behavior in bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND:Individuals with eating disorders (EDs) often struggle with markedly low self- esteem and are at risk for suicidal behavior. Dissociation and perceived burdensomeness are often cited as facilitators of suicidal outcomes. Specifically, perceived burdensomeness is comprised of self-hate and liability on others, although it remains unclear which variables most heavily influence suicidal behavior in EDs. METHODS:In a sample of 204 women with bulimia nervosa, the present study examined the potential impact of self-hate and dissociation on suicidal behavior. We hypothesized that suicidal behavior would be equally, and potentially more strongly, related to self-hate than dissociation. Regression analyses investigated the unique effects of these variables on suicidal behavior. RESULTS:Consistent with our hypothesis, a significant relationship emerged between self-hate and suicidal behavior (B = 0.262, SE = 0.081, p < .001, CIs = 0.035-0.110, R-squared =0.07) but not between dissociation and suicidal behavior (B = 0.010, SE = 0.007, p = .165, CIs = -0.389-2.26, R-squared =0.010). Additionally, when controlling for one another, both self-hate (B = 0.889, SE = 0.246, p < .001, CIs = 0.403-1.37) and capability for suicide (B = 0.233, SE = 0.080, p = .004, CIs = 0.076-0.391) were uniquely and independently associated with suicidal behavior. LIMITATIONS:Future work should include longitudinal analyses to understand temporal relationships among study variables. CONCLUSIONS:In sum, when considering suicidal outcomes, these findings support a view that highlights personal loathing rooted in self-hate rather than de-personalizing aspects of dissociation. Accordingly, self-hate may emerge as a particularly valuable target for treatment and suicide prevention in EDs.
